Sage Hill School
Sage Hill School, Newport Coast, California
A "whole school" model, Sage Hill involves every student and every teacher, broadens the learning experience beyond the classroom and creates opportunities for students to serve with compassion and conviction. Its developmentally appropriate program prepares students for more thoughtful and entrepreneurial initiatives in their junior and senior years that are both educationally sound and have real community impact.
Connecting to Killybrooke Elementary School, Wilson Elementary School, and El Sol Academy, teachers from the schools and the freshmen and sophomores from Sage Hill collaboratively design programs in language arts and science that link the learning needs of elementary school students with the teaching capacity of high school students.
Many other academic courses also include a fully integrated service curriculum component. Often partnering with local non-profits, through advanced Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Theater courses, students develop school gardens, academic Olympiads and theater outreach experiences that benefit children from local schools.
Wingspan continues to work with school leaders on the evolution of these partnerships.
"The connection to Sage Hill School is invaluable. When no one else in this community seemed to understand how to bridge the gaps, Wingspan saw it clearly and helped us build a bridge that students, teachers and parents can use."
